I would like to share interesting information about Kolam for the benefit of many of my blog readers, from abroad. Decorating almost every household in Tamil Nadu, Kolams are part of the culture in Tamil Nadu. There is no house in Tamil Nadu or Chennai which doesn’t sport this wonderful piece of art. A morning walk through an alley will give you a glimpse of all these kolams, the month of December also known as Marghazi in Tamil is the peak season for kolams, where you can see several households donning large, intricate and beautiful kolams using plain flour and colors competing among one another.
Traditionally Kolams were made using pure rice flour and it would serve as food to the insects and ants, this shows the rich culture and tradition which exists among these people. Today several competitions are held for kolams and kolams made out of color are known as Rangoli. In Kerala people make kolams out of flowers during their festive occasion which is known as pookolam.
Whatever be the significance, it is great to look at these kolams when you step out of your house in the morning.
