Obama has grown with the strong ideals of Gandhi and a Gandhi’s portrait is displayed in his Senate office. Also it is much talked about how he likes to carry a Hanuman idol with him.  So he is already well connected to India and its people emotionally.  Besides, Obama through his birth and the way he was raised and the life he has seen around , I am sure he would definitely influence to make the world a truly flat one.  So we already have an emotional connect.  Sometimes emotion fails logic.Let’s look at the logic then.

Since the collapse of USSR, emergence of China as a possible long term threat and its rising influence in East Asia, growing ring of terrorism across the world, India has become a natural choice of ally for the US ,both the countries being the strong votaries of democracy.

In 1966 with American influence we built fertilizer plants and went for high yielding varieties and benefited from the resulting green revolution.  In 1991 India again was receptive to US advice on reforms delivered via the IMF which helped India in more ways than one.  If India is something on the world economic stage today, America has been a major factor in our getting there. 2008 marks another era for India having signed the nuclear agreement with the US.  India now has access to a vast array of technology and Indo-US cooperation at this point can vastly change the world.

Incidentally Simkin was very positive about people to people relations. With more than half a million Indian visa applications received last year, 83,000 Indian students studying in the U.S. and 2.5 million U.S. citizens from Indian origin, the Indian presence in the United States is very large.
