Cast : Shreyas Talpade , Amrita Rao
After a long time I saw a Shyam Benegal movie .Title of the film did not appeal me first ,still I went to see the film because of Shyam Benegal. He is a master story teller and superbly portrayed a contemporary rural India touching upon many issues that still exist in societies like superstition , status of widow ,abuse of power in local politics , illiteracy , native manipulations, issues before transgenders and above all the still not dead human values - all presented in a humorous way giving it a shade of a comedy commercial film and you can’t really call it a parallel cinema that Benegal is mostly known for.It also briefly touches upon a critical crisis the rural India faces today – acquiring agricultural land for industrial expansion. Did the happenings in Singur or Nandigram influence Benegal ?
The set made at Ramoji film city did not look real, it was unusually too well organized to be a rural set . The UP dialects gave it an authentic touch though. Shreyas Talpade carried the role superbly , perhaps his role is getting a bit stereotyped. Amrita Rao as usual is fabulous. The supporting cast was excellent. Sonu Nigam ,Shreya Goshal and others make the songs worth collecting .
The movie reminded me of those old Rishikesh Mukherjee /Basu Chatterjee low budget movie casting likes of Amal Palekar ,Utpal Dutt – sweet and simple and you remember them for a long time.
My rating goes 4 out of 5, Must watch film
