When shall we ever stop being so obsessed with celebrity worship? Not very long ago one Indian celebrity was accused of illegal trafficking – Daler Mehendi. What it means ? Being a celebrity does not guarantee your innocence. After all who could think a year back Ramalinga Raju will be behind bar committing the worst ever corporate fraud? Let me not increase the list any farther taking the scores of politicians ,Ministers, and even ex Prime Ministers being charged with corrupt practices . No celebrities therefore can deserve exemptions .Only in India our callous security approach results in Parliament attack or 26/11 Mumbai incident or so many similar terrorists attacks. Look at the profile of the terrorists either caught or suspected. They unfortunately carry names belonging to certain religion . So why shouldn’t US intelligence be more cautious about the members belonging to this specific ethnic group ? Quite natural , is n’t it? They need to protect their country after all , why should they spare someone from suspicion just because he happens to be a celebrity in a country they hardly know. How many security personnel in Chennai airport would identify Brad Pitt ? They know their duty – frisk and question anyone who they find suspicious. Afterall we don’t give them training on knowing celebrities of different countries ! Is n’t it ? In many of the ME airports Indians/Bangladeshis are made to wait for hours at immigration check while the Americans or Europeans make their clearances in a jiffy and they have special clearance points. In Saudi you cannot even carry any non Islamic religious articles . Has there ever been any public or media outcry ? I never saw one. Every country frames their own rule of conduct or security. We must respect US and follow their terms of security if we are travelling there. . If our ego is so hurt why don’t we vow not to travel to US anymore ? Or , is it that the lure of land of milk and honey is so strong that breaks all our ego?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI don’t quite understand the whole fuss. On 31st May 2008, our immigration team had a little issue with Mr Ansar Burney when he came to Delhi. He is a human rights activist and a former minister and perhaps the only hope of Indian prisoners condemned to jail in Pakistan, including Sarabjit Singh. Why should the Indian officials have stopped a person who holds high importance for India?

The whole issue is not about the an individual being stopped and questioned. Surely it is hard on the individual concerned. But giant systems have their own programming logic built inside them. This includes even the human system and that’s how the system moves.
I would have felt upset if SRK was not allowed entry or something like that.
